Managing to reclaim some time from the other demands of life, a new track has come together.
‘future on the road’ can be found in the usual place.
Hello. Just saw this, so the grandest of apologies if you asked weeks or months ago.
I don’t see there being anything live in the near future.. Since I play everything on the tracks, it’ll take a while to work out the logistics of exactly how it would pan out in the flesh.
If anybody fancies learning the mandolin/guitar/glockenspiel parts then feel free to give me a shout! I can be a cruel task master though.
Rather shockingly, unexpected bowtie won last week’s songfight.
I never need to win anything again. Sniff.
What an empty, beautiful victory.
After the briefest of discussions, Keith of the Keith Appreciation Society agreed to come and donate a guitar riff or four to a track. It may have been the offer of vodka that swayed that decision.
None the less, you can find the resulting aural feast on the Listen page above, or here for the lazy.
In addition, for those of you that would rather stream than download, you can do so to your heart’s content over at our shiny new Soundcloud page.
It’s nice to have options.
For many years I’ve listened in to SongFight! where people write and record a song to a pre-given title within the space of one week.
It caused much anguish since a) I had no recording gear to speak of b) Writing a song in that space of time that I didn’t hate would have been like parting the red sea.
So with much pomp and ceremony, this week I submitted my first ever songfight song – ‘Crashing Cars, Awarding Stars’, and would like to call upon you fine people to go and vote for it.
I don’t win the chance to go on a world tour, or to ‘shadow an NME photographer for a night’; there’s no sexy women in g-strings waiting, and definitely no champagne. All there is is the sweet sweet taste of success.
So, instead of clicking refresh on Facebook, why not head over and vote for unexpected bowtie?
It’s Saturday, so here’s a new song.
‘i look forward to your unscheduled appearance’ will now make the Listen page above its home.
Go download and rack up some sexy Last FM stats.
It’s pretty late. I’ve had about 3 hours sleep in the last 24 and I’ve spent the best part of the past 6 of those adjusting guitars; trying to keep my lips wet enough to manage a tuneful whistle; singing and re-singing melodies; scribbling words in my battered notebook.. and almost crying in disbelief that Cubase had autosaved all of the work after crashing unexpectedly.
It feels pretty good.
I still don’t feel that I’ve ever yet written a song that’s like, good. I just never feel…not in a good way, it’s not cool, it’s not good.
– Marnie Stern
Seeing someone as amazing as Marnie Stern express this is rather comforting. It’s easy to feel like great musicians are 100% happy with everything they do, and that you must be a fraud because you have a love-hate relationship with your own songs.

Today my good friend Keith of the aptly named Keith Appreciation Society popped round to contribute a guitar track or two and mark the beginnings of… something. Not quite sure what yet, but its existence as something can’t be denied. Not unless you’re Descartes anyway.
Before any of that started, I managed to descend back into poverty as the nice recording software I was using decided to err.. expire. When I told the guy in the shop that this purchase would result in me not eating for a week, he replied:
“hey, just eat the packaging man.”
It may yet come to that.
